Too much blue tone with my Nikon D40 kit lens

I think I must be a nut. I bought a Nikon D40 with its kit lens and yet, I have not use it before. When I buy the camera, I also bought a zoom lens which is more expensive than the camera. So, all the while I use the Nikon VR 18-200 mm zoom lens. Therefore, I do not know that the D40 and its kit lens produces photos that look much less nicer than the VR 18-200 lens.

The above photo was taken with smaller aperture because it was very, very bright. I use aperture priority and adjust to :

Aperture: f/16
Focal Length: 55 mm

And the photo turned out like a picture cut out from a magazine. The thing looks bluish and flat. I cannot explain what ‘flat’ is.

Meanwhile for this shot, I took with the P mode. The colour looks washed out.

But what I like about having the Nikon D40 with the kit lens is the light weight and the tiny lens. With the VR 18-200mm, the zoom lens tend to look too ‘threatening’ when it extends. I prefer to remain ‘just another mommy proud of her kid kind of photographer’ and not the fake-professional professional photographer. The thing is when you have a bright yellow Nikon strap and a long lens, people will mistook you for some press photographer. I hate that! I feel so embarrassed when they asked me which newspapers company I am working in.
