Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01 vs. Canon Ixus 65 vs. Finepix F30 – Which camera wins?

04 Sep

Three cameras. Same price range. All received equally good reviews. The person who is going to use it wants something easy to handle. Ultimate destination – winter in UK.

Yesterday, my son’s friends wanted to get a compact digital camera from the camera fair. She was torn between Canon Ixus 65 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01. She asked for our opinions. Both Canon Ixus 65 and Panasonic go for only RM1,299 with freebies thrown in.

Well, we cannot make up our mind too because Canon is willing to throw in an extra battery but Panasonic is giving away TWO 1GB SD cards and extra battery only costs RM80. So, we went to the regular camera shop for more ideas.

The guy take out Fuji Finepix F30 and gave her these feedbacks:

1) Canon does not have international warranty but takes better photos in darker places

2) Panasonic has Leica, wide angle lenses and has international warranty

3) Fuji Finepix has international warranty, Aperture and Shutter priorities and is much more recommended by the guy because it is user friendly.

So, it was back to square one again. I suggested to her to try out each of the camera and get the feel which is more user friendly. After much contemplation, she picked Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX1. I had tested out Lumix several times and am confident she will like it. I love the Lumix for its image stabilisation and great supermacro shots. And it will be perfect for her because it comes with a ‘Snow’ programme. Taking photos in snowy condition is different because the camera needs to adjust to the bright and white surroundings.

After yesterday camera shopping trip, I am glad that I won’t be needing any camera for the time being. There are so many mind boggling choices out there and one can go cuckoo trying to get the right one. With new cameras coming out fast and furious, our purchase today will be yesterday news.

I’d say the Lumix is probably the best all-rounder, it’s very easy to use and intuitive.

The Fuji has the best picture quality and is amazing in low light up to ISO1600 with its SuperCCD technology, the Ixus is ok, not one of the best in the range.

She’ll be happy with any of them really.

I recently had to choose between the Lumix, the Ixus and Olympus mju810 for a friend. Went with the Lumix. 28mm wide angle and and OIS were the selling points.

But it was RM 1299 with only one 1GB card and extra battery cost RM 140 woh.
