Nikon D40 - DSLR for the masses?

by Lilian ·

My husband and I have been toying with the dream of selling off our Dynax 5D and get a Nikon D80 if we have the extra moolah.  It has been frustrating getting the lense we want for the Dynax.  We can’t find any Tamron or Sigma and Sony original lense costs a freaking RM2,800!

But of course, this is just our, or rather my wishful thinking.  Cameras are coming out fast and furious.  Prices drop overnight.  So, it is never a good time to get a DSLR or even a point & shoot.

Just today, I pick up from dpreview that Nikon has come out with a entry level DSLR - Nikon D40.  Hmmm…what will they think of next?

The D40 combines outstanding picture quality with a smart, lightweight and compact design that will appeal to everyone

Nikon has today announced the six megapixel, compact, ‘entry level’ D40 digital SLR. This new digital SLR loses some of the D50’s features but gains some new ones from the D80. Headline details are a new Multi-CAM530 three area AF sensor, 3D Color Matrix Metering II, custom Auto ISO (same as D80), 2.5 fps continuous shooting, no status LCD and in-camera retouching. The D40 also has lots of nice user interface touches designed to make using the camera an easier experience for first time users.  (taken from dpreview)

Sometimes, I wish the camera manufacturers would just halt, stop and pause so that one can buy a camera without worrying if it is going to be ‘yesterday’ news the moment they step out of the shop.

As for the D40, nope, it will not attract me because my current DLSR is already 6.4 MP and has many great features.

Just get the D80, you won’t regret it at all and you’ll find it much much easier to get lenses, there are loads of great bargains for second hand lenses with Nikon mount including the Tamron you can get for around RM1100 second hand.

D80 is a pro grade camera in a lower quality body, it’s a fantastic cam!

man, with the D40, now everyone can own a DSLR.
if it goes under RM 2.3k, that is…
    no $$$ for a D80? get canon instead.. hahaha…

Just go D80 and bypass the D40 if you’re really serious in photography.

The D40 lacks in body AF motor, which means it would only AF with Nikon lenses which have motor on their lenses like those AFS lenses.
