Good spots for photography in Penang

08 Jul

One of Digital Photo blog reader from Sarawak is coming to Penang and asked me where are the good spots to take photos. So, let me figure out some places:

As usual, temples are interesting because they are so colourful and those joss-sticks and their spiral smokes make dramatic shots. I am also a sucker for taking photos of lotus-flower candles. Oh ya, don’t forget those bamboo-like windows!

Here are some temples worth visiting, in terms of photography opportunity:

  1. Air Itam Dam, Kek Lok Si and huge Kuan Yin statue on the hill. These three places are located on the same spot. Every tourists will enjoy the trip to Air Itam because of their ethnicity. You can find flowers, local fruits, colour stalls selling all sorts of local goods and don’t forget the laksa. (photos on my Flickr album)
  2. Heritage spots like the Khoo Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi, Yap Temple are all located within the town area. Khoo Kongsi is a must visit because the whole place is filled with lots of carvings and other intricate designs. These places are within walking distances. If you wish, hop on the trishaw for ride to Little India which is nearby.
  3. Little India has many interesting Hindu structures and temples. The bonus point is they have lots of good Indian restaurants too. Surf over to my food blog for the locations.
  4. If you are the nature lover, check out the Tropical Spice Garden and Butterfly Farm. (photos here)

As for reasonable priced places to stay, i would recommend Sunway Hotel, Penang because it is located right smack on a food street – New Lane. But if you prefer the beach (since you are a Sarawakian, I don’t think you will be impressed with our beaches), stay at those hotels in Tanjung Bungah which is lower priced than in Batu Ferringhi.

Oops, I forget that I am writing about ‘Good places to take photos’ and not, ‘good places for foods’. Anyway, they are intertwined. So, enjoy the walk along the heritage trails of Penang. I had not gone on a real walk through the trails because of the heat but had been to a few of these places at different times. Do look out for all the old building structures which I know are not very similar to Sarawak (I had been to Kuching before). Take time to snap the faces of Penang like those trishaw riders who seemed to be in a world of their own when they are not riding their trishaws, the sweet smiles from the toothless, old hawkers and of course, the food of Penang that is one of its kind.

Have a nice holiday in Penang! Do check the archives of Malaysia Best and archives of Food Haven for more information.

I think Kek Lok Si is by far the best in Penang, really interesting place to take pics with the Pagoda being renovated and all.

After that Penang Hill has a good view of the city.
