Getting more familiar with my Nikon f2.8mm micro lens

by Lilian ·

When I first got my micro lens, I have problems with bokeh or blurred out spots on photos I took with that lens. I ranted about it in my previous post ‘Bokeh driving me nuts‘.

Shaolin Tiger left me some useful tips :

Macro you need to use at least f/11-16 and use a flash.

Shutter speeed 1/125 and above, ideally around 1/200, ISO200-400 should be fine.

I took a photo of these tiny white flowers yesterday. The above used an aperture of f3.0.

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/3
Focal Length: 105 mm

Note the blurred background? So, I experimented with smaller aperture.

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.4 sec (2/5)
Aperture: f/16
Focal Length: 105 mm

Both using aperture priority settings. I am still struggling with all manual settings. :)

So, now, I am a little bit more aware of the effects of how the aperture setting affects the photo.

Tiny steps but I am improving…

Sure is the 105mm VR…a good lens. There are time I took my macro at F2.8mm for special effect.. I have yet to take at F11 hahaha as I never take any tripod with me..
