I will do a run through on how to store your photos online and how to put them on your blog and website in another post. Meantime, I wish to do a little comparison between Flickr and Photobucket.
Both of these companies provide free space for you to store your photos. So, let’s see what each offers:
Q: How much disk space and bandwidth do I get?
A: Currently, Free accounts get 50 MB of space and 2,500 MB of bandwidth per month.
what you get with a Free Account:
- 20 MB monthly upload limit
NOTE
Though Photobucket provides more storage space, note that they set a limit on bandwith. Flickr provided 20MB free space each month but does not limit on the bandwith. If you share your photos online, the 2,500 MB bandwith is easily exceeded. Therefore, opt for Flickr if you do not wish to see empty boxes with ‘Bandwith exceeded’ on your site. I had encountered this problem previously.
There are other websites which provides free image storage but I shall stop here.
I had just purchased a Flickr Pro account which provides me:
Pro Account for just US$24.95 a year. Here’s what you’ll get with a Pro Account:
- 2 GB monthly upload limit
- Unlimited storage
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Unlimited photosets
- Permanent archiving of high-resolution original images
- The ability to replace a photo
- Ad-free browsing and sharing
And after making a comparison with Photobucket…
| Disk space | 1 GB | |
| Monthly bandwidth | Unmetered ![]() |
|
| Max image size | 1 MB | |
| Image hosting cost | 1 Year=$25 | 3 Months=$9 |
So, Flickr is my choice. I have almost 1,800 photos on my Flickr site which I had been using since 2004. Do drop by and check out my albums. They are still not organised as I just signed up a few hours ago.

Ok… So, you’ve been using Flickr since 2004 but only just signed up?

666 – Flickr provides free storage and paid subscription. Where I come from, it is ONE HUNDRED BUCKs (USD24.95) which is a lot of money. Unless you want to donate for another two years of subscription fee for me?
