Digital Camera- great gifts for kids
by Lilian ·
No, I am not joking. It really is. Considering how cheap digital cameras are nowadays, it is something worth investing. You never know what the children can do with this gadget.
My sons who are 10, 14 and 16 years old are very adept with our digital and DSLR cameras. In fact, I freely allowed my toddler to play around with our very old 1.3MP Canon Powershot A10.
It is always a surprise each time I take the CF card for downloading the photos into my PC. Shots of things at the eye level of a small toddler is very different from our ‘perceived to be perfect’ views. If you have a decently behaved toddler who knows how to handle it with care and a camera that you can afford to dispose off, then have fun experimenting.
As for my older children, they experimented with all kind of angles, objects and situations. Between them, they had taken some ‘America Funniest Home Video’ materials with our digital camera. My 10years old even take nice photos of his tonsils by opening his mouth in front of the mirror. LOL, you will be surprised how tonsils look like huge boulders in a cave.

My children are much better cameraman than my dear hubby when come to taking photos of me. Somehow, they give me less tensions and my face doesn’t have that tense look. Moreover, they are more patience to experience with different sides of the camera, height and etc. They will snap pics after pics.
The key is to teach them how to handle the camera, what to avoid, like no wet hands, no salty fingers (after eating too many chips), hang the camera on their neck to avoid dropping it, always close the flash immediately after it is not required (flash lights are filmsy things on a digital camera) and always close the lense. And no touching of the lense (though a lense filter is a must-have for expensive cameras). Other things I constantly remind them is not to take photos of fire or steam. No cameras at the beach unless I am around to supervise them.
So, time to give that old camera to your child and buy yourself a new model soon! Trust me, camera is an educational tool, much better than Playstation 2 or X-box. Who knows….you got a budding world class photographer there. I told my sons they can be a professional photographer when they grow up and their job is to take photos of naked models. LOL. Or be adventurous like a National Geographic cameramen.
Here is a shot taken by my 10 years old at the beach. Hehehe, I must say I like the shadows. It makes me slimmer! Hahaha.

In normal circumstances, my hubby will tell me ‘You cannot sit in the shade with the bright sun behind you.’ And he would have used a fill-in flash to balance the lightings. But to a 10 years old, anything goes!
Happy parent-child bonding with a camera!

[...] April admin12:59 amAdd comment Few days ago, I mentioned that digital cameras are great as gifts for kids. In my PC, I have big files of photos taken by my kids with my old Canon Powershot A10. Some are pretty impressive and some are just total black or total white screen. [...]
