Thaipusam photos

23 Jan

I cannot get over the hang up on taking photos of Hindus carrying kavadi. However, many of them are really nice to pause to take photos. Still, I feel it is terribly rude to do so. Bah!

However, I am getting better this year because I can take photos of their front views.

Yet, it is not easy to take the photos because there were throngs of milk jars carriers and there were folks (Jabatan Pertahanan Awam personnels) to make sure that their paths are not blocked. However, with a DSLR and a bright yellow NIKON word on the strap, they are at least cincai with me.

This year, I only went to the temple grounds on the eve of Thaipusam. It was rather dark and hence, I couldn’t get any nice photos. I dare not point the flash at those kavadi bearers. Without flash, all my photos were blurred.

Thaipusam – A festival photographers shouldn’t miss

19 Jan

Note that 23rd January is Thaipusam. However, you can get some very nice photos on the day before that when they have the procession for Lord Murugan from the temple. It is one of those things that is truly worth photographing. The Hindu devotees will line the road with coconuts and they will break the coconuts on the road as a sign of cleansing the path for Lord Murugan chariot to pass by.

So far, I haven’t got a chance to capture the coconut breaking ceremony because the traffic jam is too bad and oh boy, I am afraid of them throwing the nuts and hit my toes. You can join these devotees to break the coconuts because they have moutains of coconuts.

Check out my Flickr Album for Thaipusam and Hindu festivals.

Don’t miss the event. Oh ya, one tip – Beware of pickpockets.

Colourful balls

22 Dec

tongyuen_tangyuan_kueh_ee

Today is the 22nd December and it is the Chinese Winter Solstice. So, as usual, we roll rice balls made from glutinous rice flour. The above is bowl that I personally made. I love the pink, white and the blue china. It looks so Chinese to me. I had wanted to use my DLSR camera to take better photos but my kids were fooling around. So, I have to take a quick shot with the Nikon P4.

These are what my kids came up with. LOL, not a single one with one colour tone. They mixed and messed to get these colour combination. They love playing with this and I enjoy keeping this Chinese tradition of rolling tong yuen.

I also got videos of them doing it and it is nice to watch back the video from last year. The kids have grown soooo much.

Overflowing

01 Dec

ice kacang

I just got myself the Sony Ericsson P1i and am having a hard time getting use to qwerty keyboard and surfing with the Opera browser. Top that with a new iMac and I probably spend 50% of my time making mistakes, searching for buttons and cleaning up my errors.

So, that leaves me with very little time to do anything.

inedible jelly balls

That’s what it means by overflowing. Overflow with clumsiness from an old (biatch) dog trying to learn new tricks?

Generally, the 3.2MP camera that comes with the SE P1i is nothing to shout about. And nope, I have no desire for the K850i. I tested it and it is just a regular phone.

Dusk color with Pentax Optio M20

21 Nov

It may be a cheap camera we bought for our son as his first ‘toy’. However, this camera has been rather good, considering that it is only RM690. I like take macro shots of food photos with it more than using the Nikon P4 because it won’t give lens shadow and the colour looks more appetising.

Northam Road, Penang

It was dusk when I took this photo using night mode. I place it on top of our car’s roof to avoid too much camera shake and grab a photo of the high towers and the colorful skies. It was just a random picture as all of us were getting into the car after our dinner at Northam Court.

Well….maybe it is because I am such a good photographer so even cheap cameras produce good pictures? The photos are all rather blur as can be expected when we take photos in dim light minus flash. And noobies, don’t ever use your flash to capture photos like these because it will spoil the mood! If you are not in a hurry, place the camera on something steady and set the timer to avoid camera shake.
