Full details on Canon’s site

Foodcrazee is a blogger who posts yummy food photos. He is hunting for a camera and asked about Canon Ixus 800. Well, Foodcrazee, I am no camera expert but there are a few things that I would consider:

This model is just released and as with all new models, the word ‘New’ translates as ‘More expensive’. I check the internet price and most quoted around USD499 which I believe is way over RM1.6K? Frankly, I would not spend more than RM1.5K inclusive of memory card and batteries on a digital camera. If I have that kind of dough, I would add another few hundred and get a prosumer model.

What is the difference between Canon Powershot modesl and Canon Ixus?

On Canon’s site, they stated this:

Powershot range - Value for money

Ixus range - Style & substance

I had seen the commercial on TV for Canon Ixus and they show this very zen like scene with a Japanese expert. Whoaa….that looks expensive.

But let’s think, is it really worth the money to get a latest model? Seriously, if you have been amongst hoardes of people taking photos, you do not want a miniscule camera. The bigger, the better. People are moving towards DSLR cameras, black, big and with good grip. I believe Canon Powershot models are bigger in size and as I had said earlier, it has good grip.

So, Foodcrazee, you may want to check out

  1. Powershot cameras,
  2. check the features of an earlier model of Ixus,
  3. Canon Powershot A700
  4. compare Canon with Olympus myu 700
  5. and Panasonic FX 1.

Here is what cnet reviewed:

What you need to know

We like:

Great performance and pictures; effective image stabilisation; attractive, comfortable design

We don’t like:

No aperture-priority or shutter-priority modes; awkward optical viewfinder and power button

CNET.co.uk judgement:

The Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS has practically everything you could want in a compact camera, though you might think the price tag a bit steep

From the above review, I believe the camera is fully automatic and you cannot play around with the manual buttons. Being able to twiddle with aperture priority and shutter priority is a good way to learn photography. For me, I like to be in control, adjusting aperture and shutter speed, not that I am good but I like that.

But the plus point is Foodcrazee will be able to close up, macro shots of drooling foods. So, good luck in your hunt!

thanx for the great help. Looks like Olympus Mju 800 is my next choice. Reason why I want a compact is so i can bring them any where even while working. Cant be carrying a DSLR camera while working, can I ? I work in a restaurant ler….chuckle.

    Thanx again

  3. ShaolinTiger Says:

For compact the Canon is most foolproof, the Ixus have really nice clear screens too.

If you want slightly better image quality, and better stabiliser (clearer pics) go for the Panasonic Lumix.

If you want something more flexible with vibrant colours, grab a Casio Exilim 750.
